Urban densification is quite commonly accepted as a strategy for promoting a more sustainable development. Increasing density is seen as means to prevent urban sprawl, to reduce negative environmental impacts and to strengthen urban liveliness. In this multi¬disciplinary seminar the feasibility of densification policy in Finnish context and the current challenges of cities in Europe will be debated.
The seminar is based on the spearhead project Integrated and Dense Urban Structure of theme Living Environment and Urban Structure of the Urban Studies Network in the Helsinki Metropolitan Region. The seminar is organised by the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (YTK) at Aalto University.
